Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for more than 20 years. She's also a seasoned public speaking. Feminist Frequency is a channel that hosts videos, comments and an analysis of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for nearly a decade. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit educational site that explores the representation of women in pop culture narratives - is created and directed by Sarkeesian. Alongside working to expose the issues surrounding the targeted and sexist attacks on women, others of minority groups in the online world, she is dedicated to breaking the stereotypes prevalent in popular culture. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. Alongside being a well-known public speaker, she's given presentations at TEDxWomen XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Interested in issues concerning gender and feminism since the age of 7, she started her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009 while still a student at the university. A woman with ambitions to launch a web-series that would examine the gender representation of video games was targeted by an internet-based campaign. The attack wasn't enough to halt her. Instead, it increased her importance to be a feminist as well as media critique. She has won numerous awards for her contribution to the cause of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit that explores the representations of women within pop media stories.
