Guarnaschelli was the daughter of cookbook editor Maria Guarnaschelli and John Guarnaschelli. In the year 1991, she graduated from Barnard College with an art historical degree. For one year, she was paid a minimum wages at the American Place in 1991. Guarnaschelli began her journey into the world of food by working with her mother to make a number of dishes and creating the books. Guarnaschelli started her career working as a sous chef under Larry Forgione. Her son Marc Forgione was the Iron Chef. Guarnaschelli later went on to work in various restaurants in France as well as Los Angeles. Guy Savoy is the owner of La Butte Chaillot. Before taking over Butter as the executive chef, Guarnaschelli was employed with Daniel Boulud at his eponymous restaurant. She was executive chef at The Darby restaurant until its closure. She was chairperson of the museum of Food and Drink's Culinary Council. In 2013, her first cookbook was published. "Old school comfort food: The Way I Learned to Cook" comprises the author's autobiographical details and her favorite recipes developed by Guarnaschelli during her career as a professional.
